  • SIE, the title of my photographic series, has a double meaning in German: it refers both to the female gender and to the formal form of address SIE, i.e. you. In my series, I transfer this duality of language to SIE as the photographer by being both the observer and the observed.

I stand alone and abandoned in spectacular spaces that include empty water reservoirs, deserted swimming pools, empty churches and a submarine bunker. As a trained architect, I have always been interested in unusual and abandoned spaces. Every space we enter, every place we inhabit or use, bears the traces of human existence and creates a link between past, present and future.

The loneliness of the woman is intensified by the size and emptiness of the spaces. As a three-year-old who was left alone by her parents for too long, this loneliness expresses a part of my personality. Without gestures or facial expressions, I enter into a dialog with the viewer. The smallness of the person, which is the same in all the pictures, forms the common thread within the series.

The slowness and concentration in the analog creation of the pictures is intrinsic to them, each picture is precisely photographed with a large-format camera, just as the high-quality analog prints are produced s a logical consequence. Framed at a size of 1.20 x 1.40 meters, the recipient feels as if they are standing in the rooms themselves.

This internationally photographed series, which has been growing for 20 years, shows the changing times in fashion, haircuts and my own transformation.

It is an emotional journey through special spaces in Europe.
