We The Liminal- A Collaboration With Trans People Of Color

New York City, New York • archanakumarphoto.com

  • In my long-term project We the Liminal Beings, my intention is to make visible Trans people of color in India and around the world. I spend time with them in their environment, connect with them, and make images that reflect their vision of themselves rather than being comfortable stereotypes.

I grew up in a conservative Indian household, where I felt compelled to fit in and stifle my true self. Even though my ‘otherness’ is not the same as that of Trans people, I see in them shades of my own lived experience: the disconnect between our inner and outer selves.

We are all liminal beings, with the potential and freedom to inhabit different ‘selves’; yet many of us are caught up in societal structures of fixed identities, which force us to make black and white choices and shun the ambiguity of the grey zone.

Trans people have the courage to rise above this false duality, accept the fluidity of the self, and present their core truth to the world.

The world needs to hear this truth.

    Meet are my Trans collaborators:
Siddi: a brilliant transgender woman in Mumbai, an engineer by training, and trying her hand at film production.

Toto: a young non-binary teacher and an upcoming actor, who lives with their girlfriend and 4 cats in Mumbai.

Aanchal: a therapist in Mumbai, who runs a therapy organization, and prefers to call themselves ‘Queer Puppy’.

Hana: a transgender woman in Mumbai, a graphic artist, who has begun hormonal treatment, and is excited about her changes.

Nadia: a Chinese American in NYC, born in Hong Kong, a Venture Capitalist plus a digital expert.
