When I began visiting the Shankill in 2017, I quickly realized it had a story to tell. It was a place where the past coexists with the present. It was unlike any other community I had been to, and I wanted to understand, through photography, the unique story of the place and the people.
This project is a portrait of the Shankill and the people who live there. I have photographed the people, the bonfires, the parades, and the street itself. But what I have mostly captured is my story, my impressions and assumptions. What I would like to do now is include the voices, through interviews and more formal portraits, of the people of the Shankill. I want them to have a part in this project, a voice and a point of view. I believe that with their input this project could be a powerful document and testimony of a place and people who are proud of their past and who are navigating their future.
